PATENT TOOLKIT SPONSORS INNOVATION AT VAAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY
Trydian Interactive and Smit & Van Wyk Patent Attorneys, partners in developing the Patent Toolkit, are excited to announce our cooperation with the Iscor Innovation Centre at the Vaal University of Technology. The Innovation Centre assists staff and students in developing new products and creating their own employment via technopreneurship.

The Patent Toolkit will be accessible free of charge to staff and students of the Vaal University of Technology at the Innovation Centre’s computer centre. “Through this corporate social investment, we hope to create awareness amongst young entrepreneurs of the importance of protecting their inventions, and – most importantly – to give young entrepreneurs the tools to ensure that their inventions are legally protected,” says Carel Smit, partner in Smit & Van Wyk Patent Attorneys.

Jan Jooste, Head of the Iscor Innovation Centre, is convinced that the Patent Toolkit will add a lot of value: “The Patent Toolkit is an essential first for South Africa. We need to instil in students the value of safeguarding their future intellectual property.”

Janhendrik Oosthuizen, managing director of Trydian Interactive, is very positive about cooperating with the Iscor Innovation Centre: “We are passionate about entrepreneurship – we therefore strongly associate with the Iscor Innovation Centre’s drive to promote and assist young entrepreneurs.”

TRYDIAN INTERACTIVE LAUNCHES PATENT TOOLKIT
Trydian Interactive and Smit & Van Wyk Patent Attorneys have partnered to produce an innovative product for inventors and the intellectual property community: The Patent ToolkitTM. This toolkit provides inventors with everything they need to file provisional patent applications themselves and ensure that their ideas and intellectual property are properly protected from the start.

Until now, people who wanted to file their own provisional patent applications had only two options. They could either hire patent attorneys to draft their applications at a very high cost, or file their applications on their own without any guidance, which more often than not resulted in inadequate protection and the loss of their rights to their inventions.

The Patent ToolkitTM provides an affordable solution to inventors who want to ‘do-it-themselves’ and contains not only an introductory course on drafting patent specifications, but also numerous examples of best practice, common mistakes, and all the necessary forms to file an application. It even includes the template used by the patent attorneys themselves in drawing up a client’s patent specification. All these components will be combined with multimedia elements to make the Patent ToolkitTM practical and very user-friendly.

The Patent ToolkitTM is now available at a limited special launch offer of R1 999.

ISO 9000 TOOLKIT RELEASED
Trydian Interactive, in partnership with Revworth Consulting, has released an ISO 9000 Toolkit. This multimedia toolkit brings the implementation of an internationally recognised quality management system (QMS) within the reach of every organisation.

Implementing an ISO 9000 QMS can make an organisation more efficient and profitable by reducing wastage, making processes more efficient, allowing employees to take ownership of their own processes, correcting information at the right time and lowering costs. Unfortunately the implementation of a QMS is an expensive exercise. Quality consultants charge organisations so much to install a QMS, it becomes unaffordable to most organisations. The ISO 9000 Toolkit provides access to the expertise of a consultant without the cost.

The ISO 9000 Toolkit provides users with a comprehensive, practical, step-by-step guide for implementing a QMS following a process that has been developed by internationally experienced quality management professionals. It will take users through the entire process from beginning to end, and it contains everything needed to enable users to plan, design, implement, audit and maintain their own QMS.

With 24 interactive tutorials; over 300 templates, examples, spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations; and also completed QMSs for four different kinds of organisations, the ISO 9000 Toolkit is the most cost-effective, comprehensive and user-friendly package currently on the market.

WEB-BASED SUPPORT FOR TEXTBOOKS PROVES GREAT SUCCESS
Trydian Interactive’s web-based learning support service for two university textbooks published by Van Schaik Publishers, proved to be a great success in its first year of operation. It was successful not only in terms of the number of users, but also in terms of the overwhelmingly positive feedback received from these users. Although the concept of web-based learning support for a specific textbook is well-established internationally and increasingly employed by international publishers of academic textbooks, this is the first and currently the only project of its nature in South Africa.

A questionnaire was sent to all of the almost 2 000 users, to which a representative section of about 5% responded. Some interesting statistics: 81% of users found it easy to interact with the interactive workbooks with only 4% disagreeing; 87% experienced the feedback that is provided by the workbook once a question has been answered, as useful, with only 2% disagreeing; 91% would like to have access to similar web-based services for their other subjects; and finally 92% indicated that they would recommend the web-based learning support to other students, with none disagreeing.

Trydian Interactive perceives these statistics as a vindication of the high quality of our products and of the success of our instructional design methodology in the market.

TRYDIAN INTERACTIVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETES NEDCOR CONTRACT
Trydian Interactive is proud to announce the successful completion of its first major contract with Nedcor, one of South Africa’s biggest financial institutions. The contract entailed the development of a multimedia presentation and information resource for a new financial product by Nedcor’s Derivatives Desk. The resource entailed complex technical information on the mineral and energy markets’ functioning and interaction and also various financial instruments. The main challenge for Trydian Interactive was to structure the vast amount of information in a logical and coherent format and to explain each element within the structure in such a way as to be easily comprehensible to a non-technical audience. This was done by using voice-over, text and animation. The project therefore necessitated an integrated creative communication approach.

When awarding the contract to Trydian Interactive, the Nedcor project team was perfectly aware of Trydian’s competitive advantage over other multimedia agencies. Trydian Interactive’s background in e-learning – specifically e-learning in the financial sector – testifies to our ability to work with and comprehend complex content that must be structured and formulated in such a way that it becomes easily comprehensible for the target audience. Moreover, our team are multi-skilled and have masters and honours degrees in subjects ranging from multimedia and international business management, to economics and policy analysis and formulation. Feedback from our client, Nedcor, was very positive and we trust that this project will pave the way for a long-term business relationship.

TRYDIAN INTERACTIVE LAUNCHES E-LEARNING SUPPORT FOR TEXTBOOKS
Trydian Interactive, in partnership with Van Schaik Publishers, has launched a web-based learning support service for two university textbooks: Economics for first year students and Strategic Management: Southern African concepts and cases. This is a brave first in the South African market. Although the concept of web-based learning support for a specific textbook is well-established internationally and increasingly employed by international publishers of academic textbooks, this is the first time that a South African publishing house has ventured into this arena. This web-based learning support will be accessible free of charge to any person who purchases one of these Van Schaik textbooks and will be available on Trydian Interactive’s web-based virtual campus, Learnactive.

The web-based learning support service includes interactive workbooks that are aligned with the chapters of each textbook, discussion forums, chatrooms and a calendar function.

LEARNACTIVE LAUNCHES NEW RETIREMENT FUND ONLINE LEARNING PACKAGES
Learnactive, Trydian Interactive’s web-based virtual campus, has launched two new online learning packages aimed at the Retirement Fund industry:
  1. Retirement Fund Basics is fulfilling a pressing need in South Africa to educate fund members at all levels – and especially employee-elected trustees – on the basics of retirement funds.
  2. Retirement Fund Trustee Training is aimed at training retirement fund trustees – especially employee-elected trustees – on their role and responsibilities.
These packages are definitely unique: they are aligned with SAQA unit standards and endorsed by INSETA – the insurance sector’s education and training authority. Retirement funds, fund members and trustees can therefore effectively use these packages to gain training credits. Retirement Fund Basics will earn a learner one credit on NQF level 1, while Retirement Fund Trustee Training will earn a learner a total of eight credits on NQF level 3.

Source material for the packages was created by the Institute for Retirement Funds (IRF) and the Insurance Institute of South Africa (IISA). E-learning development was done according to Learnactive’s outcomes-based education (OBE) instructional design methodology. The packages follow a non-linear learning approach and facilitate the building of a portfolio of evidence by the learner, which can be submitted directly to Learnactive for assessment.
